A Digital Index for the Folk Literature Collectanea
(Suwenxue congkan 俗文學叢刊)

This index to the 620 volume collectanea Suwenxue congkan (Folk Literature: Materials in the Collections of the Institute of History and Philology) was compiled as part of a teaching and research project of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature and the Department for the History of China, Faculty of East Asian Studies, at Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
The Suwenxue congkan series is one of the most important sources for research on the Chinese performative arts of the early modern and modern periods. It contains texts dating from the eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries, including opera librettos, narrative texts, comic sketches, as well as reprints of scholarly journals on the theatrical arts. The materials were compiled by the Chinese poet, linguist, and cultural reformer Liu Bannong 劉半農 (Liu Fu 劉復, 1891–1934), with the support of the historian Fu Sinian 傅斯年 (1896–1950), the founding director of the Institute for History and Philology of the Academia Sinica. Both scholars were consciously collecting materials for what they understood as a “national literature.” Since then, the Taipei-based publishing house Shin Wen Feng 新文豐 has reproduced these texts photomechanically and published them between 2002 and 2016.
Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Breuer and Prof. Dr. Christine Moll-Murata, a group of students (Lisa Herrmann, Johanna Marie Poppek, Anna Schulte, Kai Wycisk, and Mark Y.S. Yang 楊雁翔 ) compiled relevant data into Excel sheets (PDF version linked below), which were then checked and edited by student assistants Xiong Hongyue 熊紅月, Huang Gufeng 黃谷風, Yang Yang 楊漾, and Wu Kuan-Wei 吳冠緯. As a follow-up project, a search interface has been programmed by our Faculty’s IT specialist, Christoph Piechotta, also linked below.
